Freight Rate Adjustment for August 2025

Hapag-Lloyd to Increase GRI

Hapag-Lloyd announced a GRI increase of US$1,000 per container on routes from the Far East to the West Coast of South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, effective August 1 (for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, the increase will be effective August 22, 2025).

Maersk to Adjust Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on Multiple Routes

Far East Asia to South Africa/Mauritius

On July 28, Maersk adjusted the Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for all 20ft and 40ft cargo containers on shipping routes from China, Hong Kong, China and other Far East Asia ports to South Africa/Mauritius. The PSS is US$1,000 for 20-foot containers and US$1,600 for 40-foot containers.

Far East Asia to Oceania

Starting August 4, 2025, Maersk will implement a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on Far East to Oceania routes. This surcharge applies to all container types. This means that all cargo shipped from the Far East to Oceania will be subject to this surcharge.

Far East Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean

Starting August 1, 2025, the Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for Far East Asia to Northern Europe E1W routes will be adjusted to US$250 for 20-foot containers and US$500 for 40-foot containers. The Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for Far East to Mediterranean E2W routes, which began on July 28, is the same as for the aforementioned Northern Europe routes.

US Shipping Freight Situation

Latest News: China and the United States have extended the tariff truce for another 90 days. This means both sides will retain the 10% base tariff, while the suspended US 24% "reciprocal tariff" and Chinese countermeasures will be extended for another 90 days.

Freight rates from China to the US began declining at the end of June and remained low throughout July. Yesterday, shipping companies updated Senghor Logistics with container shipping rates for the first half of August, which were similar to those for the second half of July. It can be understood that there was no significant increase in freight rates to the US in the first half of August, and no increase in taxes either.

Senghor Logistics reminds: Due to severe congestion at European ports, and shipping companies have opted not to call at some ports and adjusted routes, we recommend European customers ship as soon as possible to avoid delivery delays and be mindful of price increases.

Regarding the US, many customers rushed to ship before tariff increases in May and June, resulting in lower cargo volumes now. However, we still recommend locking in Christmas orders in advance and rationally planning production and shipments with factories to reduce logistics costs during the low freight rates period.

The peak season for container shipping has arrived, impacting import and export businesses worldwide. Therefore, our quotes will be adjusted to optimize logistics solutions for our customers. We will also plan shipments in advance to secure favorable freight rates and shipping space.
